What’s Up With the Privacy Allegations Against Snapchat AI?

March 11, 2025

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has recently filed a complaint against popular social media application, Snapchat. This complaint involves the “My AI” chatbot, which allegedly poses risks and harms to young users.

The FTC’s investigation suggests that the company may be violating laws against minors’ data privacy on the app.

Young users of Snapchat have been complaining about the platform’s new artificial intelligence tool — and so are their guardians. Allegations of various, uncomfortable encounters have arisen.

  • One teen took a photograph, and the Snapchat AI complimented someone’s shoes and asked who the subjects were.
  • Another user used the chatbot service to write a song, but the app refused to admit its collaboration once played back.
  • The service also claimed not to know where another teenager lived, but after talking more with chatbot, it accurately revealed his state.
  • Many users take issue with the fact that you have to upgrade to a paid, premium service in order to turn off the My AI feature. IT costs $3.99, and many underage users have reported buying Snapchat+ just to disable My AI, and then they cancel their subscription.

When asked about the situation, Snapchat asserted that they “improve My AI based on community feedback and is working to establish more guardrails to keep its users safe,” and that “similar to its other tools, users don’t have to interact with My AI if they don’t want to.”

The lawsuit asks the higher courts to determine where the line lies between good AI and data privacy. Chatbots often collect and process large amounts of user data, raising concerns about how this data is stored, used, and shared. Companies will need to ensure robust data protection measures to avoid legal issues.

This case also highlights the growing scrutiny on AI-powered chatbots, especially those that frequently interact with minors. Companies may face more rigorous investigations and potential legal actions if their AI tools are found to be harmful or deceptive.

The Snapchat case also arouses questions about how transparent AI has to be about being artificial. The parents of young users also said that it the chatbot doesn’t always reveal that it’s just a robot. You can speak to it alone or add it to a groupchat, change the bot’s name and avatar, and interact with it as any other friend. This presents obvious concerns for parents!

What was once futuristic is now commonplace; artificial intelligence flourishes throughout everyday life. Students and professionals use these tools to guide their deas and rewrite emails. Entrepreneurs draft business plans and drive their creative juices.

Businesses using chatbots must remember to stay compliant with evolving regulations. This involves adhering to data privacy laws and ensuring transparency in how AI systems operate and handle user data.

Always do your own research into any topic that you broach with chatbots. They can plagiarize, make mistakes and even lie. Technology works best when mixed with human intelligence and intervention.

The balance between fostering innovation in AI and ensuring user safety and privacy is crucial, and will continue to define our use of this technology in the future. Companies will need to navigate this landscape carefully to avoid stifling technological advancements while protecting their clients AND employees! Users need to understand the limitations and concerns with artificial intelligence bots, of all kinds.

When using AI chatbots yourself, remember that it is just a computer code that can be faulty, biased and inaccurate. They can be useful tools, but must be approached with caution.
